Deep within the captivating rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His being was pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was to tend to his flock of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes among the lone tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day upon day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

But, there were at here times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.

Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.

One day he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw no beast.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a few more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
